How the UFC began

The first ever UFC event was held in 1993,it was a set up to on the premise to discover the world's best fighting style but in reality the tournament was set up by the gracie family in order to promote gracie jujitsu. It was a very different tournament compared to the one we see on TV today, there was basically no rules and no time limit. Each competitor was representing his own particular fighting style, it was boxer vs karate and wrestler vs kick boxer and so on.Royce Gracie was the winner of this first event, his style was Brazilian jujitsu a ground fighting system developed by his family. He won simply because he took figthter's out of their comfort zone, when he fought he would take his opponent to the ground and submit them.A Pro kickboxer that was on the ground with Royce might as well been a priest or a accountant because he could not use his skills on the ground therefor he was defenseless. This led to the realisation that if you were to enter this competition you had to be well versed in ground and stand up fighting and this is how Mixed Martial Arts[MMA] came about. In 2001 a company called Zuffa bought the UFC they got it sanctioned and put it on cabel telivision they added more rules and regulations and they brought the sport of MMA into the main stream. This is the ufc we see today.
